There are two main viewpoints concerning the issue of Imamate, The first is that of the Sunnis, who hold that the Prophet(saws), may God’s peace and blessing be on him and his descendants, did not introduce any successor and say that the community had to choose the Prophet’s successor and leader of the Muslims. The second viewpoint is that of the Imamiyyah Shi’ites, who consider Imamate as a divinely ordained position and as a continuation of prophet hood and say that God designates an Imam just as He appoints a prophet. The Imamiyyah Shi’ites possesses a large number of solid proofs confirmed by intellect, and evidence from the Qur’an and the Sunnah, included in theological, exegetic and hadith sources. The present preface explicates the Shi’ites’ intellectual viewpoint on the aforementioned issue (of succession) explores the following points about man’s nature and inclinations.1.We know that Islam is an everlasting religion sent for all people of all times.2.The holy Prophet (saws) made every effort for the propagation and advancement of the divine religion of Islam, made use of every opportunity, worked hard and gladly throughout his life, made extraordinary sacrifices and was ready to die for strengthening people’s faith. This is confirmed by the following Qur’anic verses:“Perhaps you will kill yourself with grief because they do not believe” (26:3)also,“Then maybe you will kill yourself with grief, sorrowing after them, if they do not believe in thisannouncement” (18:6)3.A large number of his best and the worthiest men were martyred in the cause of Allah.4.He made clear to people all that brought to them prosperity in various aspects. Secondary points of fiqh and traditions recorded in the sources of hadithand Islamic jurisprudence of both Shi’ite and Sunni schools testify to this statement.

This book has been dedicated to the memories of Haji Ra-jabali Gulamhussein Datoo, Late Mullah Bashir Hassanali Rahim, Late Soghrabai Bashir Rashim, Late Aziz Anwarali Da-too & Late Qais Mahmood Nurmohamad. All readers are requested to recite Al-Fateha for the Isale Sawaab of the above Marhumeen. In 1989 my grand-father, the Late Mullah Bashir Hassanali Rahim decided to create awareness amongst the youngsters of the tragedy of Karbala’, its pathos, impact and message. The intention for this was since due to the fact that the majaalis were in the language of Urdu, the youth and younger genera-tion were not fully aware of the purpose of the month of Muharram.Once the book was distributed among the communiy to this era, they began to have children's majaalis during the twelve days. They were encouraged to host the majlis turn by turn, re-cite, and take charge of nawha and tabarrukaat, etc. My grand-father would prepare the material for them. Alhamdulillah the tradition continues to this day.The past has now come to repeat itself, and not only has it af-fected Europe, but the Muslim Shi'a community all over the world, especially where I live in London, Ontario, Canada. At the mosque, I observe the surrounding of the youth and young-er generation and what I see is unexplainable. The youth and younger generation not only do not know who our Imam is, but how he and his family sacrificed their life for us, which is why I have tackled on the responsibility to take great care of this matter.

The importance of the martyrdom of the Imam al-Husayn can be seen in the great attention paid to it by the early Muslim historians whose works have survived to the present day. Most of these historical works are of a general kind but the amount of space which they devote to this event indicates the momentous impact it had on Muslims. The early historians whose works are my main concern all lived in the third and fourth centuries of the Islamic era. They based their works, in the main, on earlier monographs devoted entirely to the subject which only survived in these later works. Fortunately the bibliographical works of Ibn Nadim, al-Tusi and al-Najashi provide us with evidence of many of these earlier monographs. We can also deduce them from the writings of later historians. In at-tempting to describe this historical tradition, I have divided the account into ten phases. In these phases, I will point out what survives from earlier writers and analyze the different presentations. It will be necessary, first, to give a list of the monographs or lengthy ac-counts on the martyrdom of al-Husayn which we have some record of or which we can summarize:*al-Asbagh b. Nubata[1] (d. second half of 1st cent. AH),*Jabir b. Yazid al-Ju`fi[2] (d. 128),*Ammar b. Mu`awiya[3] (d. 133),*`Awana b. al-Hakam[4] (d. 147),*Abu Mikhnaf[5] (d. 157),*Hisham b. al-Kalbi[6] (d. 204),*Al-Waqidi[7] (d. 207),*Nasr b. Muzahim[8] (d. 212),

Allah the Almighty sent Prophet Moosa (a.s.) for the guidance of the rebellious Firaun. To implement this gigantic task, he (a.s.) beseeched the Almighty,“Appoint a minister from my progeny; my brother Haroon; strengthen my back with him; and make him a partner in my affairs. ”(Surah Taha, Verses 29-31)Prophet Moosa (a.s.) was amongst the Prophets of Allah with unflinching determination (Ulul Azm). The Holy Quran has explained determination thus,“And if you exercise patience and adopt piety, then surely these are from the affairs that require determination. ”(Surah Ale Imran, Verse, 186)Hazrat Luqman (a.s.) advised his son,“O my son! Establish prayers, enjoin good, restrain from evil and be patient over whatever (calamity) befallsyou. Surely, these are from the affairs that require determination.“The above verse clearly shows that establishment of prayers, enjoinment of good, restraining from evil andexercising patience on all calamities and difficulties that afflict us require a great deal of courage andresolute determination. On the order of Allah the Almighty, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) announced his Prophethood and wentpublic with his mission. The occasion was Dawat Zul Asheerah. After making the necessary announcements, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) sought a helper and minister for himself. Ameerul Momineen Ali Ibne Abi Taalib (a.s.) promised to help and assist him (s.a.w.a.) in his mission. From the aforementioned incidents, it becomes amply clear that for monumental tasks such as these, eventhe greatest Prophets and Messengers of Allah require the help and assistance of somebody. Also, this supporter, helper and minister should be from the family of the Prophet. Prophet Haroon (a.s.) was the brother of Prophet Moosa (a.s.) while Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) was the brother of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.).

The author is a defender of the Imams of Guidance who car-ried on the Shari’a of the Master of Messengers (S), raised the saline features of the creed, explained the Sunnah and pro-moted righteousness. The said Imams (‘a) disseminated the Islamic teachings whenever they had the opportunity to do so, braving nUmarous trials and tribulations, persevering in every hostile environment. Their foes envied them while those who despised and hated them harboured a great deal of grudge against them. The intestines of some of them were cut open while the livers of others were chopped. Swords severed their joints, and they were hurled into dark dungeons. Despite all of this, the light of the truth did, indeed, dispel the darkness of misguidance. Truth always subdues falsehood. Generations have been obliterated and new ones have come as the scholars of the Infallible Household remain vigilant as guardians of theShari’a. They took upon themselves to study and clarify its obscurities and comprehend its pith The knowledge of Ahl al-Bayt (‘a) has received a great deal of attention and awarded a great deal of concern; therefore, major Islamic cities have been filled with many a genius and a scholar. These set up the rules and established the branches. Their pens delved into each and every field and wrote about every branch of knowledge and scholarship.I find myself at this juncture reluctant to discuss the branches of knowledge about which they wrote or the arts they categorized according to queries, or the precious treasures for whose safeguarding they dedicated themselves. The libraries of the Western world, at major cities, are filled with large num-bers of such great works. The halls of their institutes are crowded with thousands of books which their pillars have re-corded, not to mention what is available at Islamic cities in the East of great books and magnificent literary works. Publishing houses and scientific institutes came to their universities and scientific institutes and took to serious work, verifying what is written and bringing out what is treasured. They kept explain-ing and critiquing, clarifying, comparing, and examining. This poet is simply referring to the Karbala’ tragedy, for it certainly is the greatest of all tragedies, the most momentous of all catastrophes that befell the Progeny of the Chosen One(S). The series of disasters that accompanied the march under-taken by force by the members of the House of Revelation from Medina to Iraq, then to Syria, could cause anyone's heart to swell and bleed. The glorious Imams (‘a) used to always urge their followers not to forget it and to do everything they could to keep it alive in their memory saying, “Keep our cause alive! May Allah have mercy on whoever keeps our cause alive!”Therefore it was accompanied by chapters where the narra-tion played an important role, stamping it with a very sober and emotionally exciting stamp, one that excites what the souls hide and the minds conceal. The hearts of the Shi’as are sorely distressed and are filled with profoundly sad thoughts filled with frightening images. The hearts are filled with outrage at everyone who committed that heinous crime.

Imam Husain (‘a) is the greatest personality who has made all historical events of humanity everlasting. He is among those great personages who gave shape to social civilization and principles that form the basis of a life of culture. The Imam and the leader of nobles, he is the most prominentindividual to have shown miracles in the field of life and led the caravan of humanity to destination and gave movement to their aspirations. He guided them towards a moderate society. A so- ciety where equality is given an important position so that all the people, low and high, may benefit from it.The Imam struggled more than any other reformer. He be-stowed and offered sacrifice because he took along with him- self the people of his family and his companions so that he may sacrifice himself and them also so that in every place in the east, the command of Quran and heavenly justice is estab- lished. Because he had no other aim except the removal of op-pression, destruction of injustice and establishment of a justgovernment. A government in which man could bring out peace, greatness and prosperity according to the justice that the Almighty Allah wants in the earth…and after that the life of the Holy Imam became an ideal exemplar for all ages and all generations and an example of human Values. The life history of most of the reformers, who laid down theirlives for communities and in generations, remained illuminated and their fruits and results served as signs for the people. But it was only for a particular period and limited duration. Then not after a long time its effect wears off just as light disperses in the atmosphere. However the life of Imam Husain (‘a) has split the horizon ofhistory in such a way that he had light of guidance for all the people just as the signs of death and destruction for the des- troyers and oppressors given as a souvenir to all generations. The life of Imam Husain (‘a) merged with the souls of thepeople and became united with their feelings and emotions, be- cause he was such a fresh one that fragrance of honor and greatness issued from him. He was the one to take the society to the field of contest so that their aims may be realized and that their fate may be appointed.

Praise be to Allah the Lord of the worlds. Benedictions be upon Muhammad (S) and his Purified Progeny (a.s). Peace be upon the righteous companions. Some of the controversial issues have divided the Muslims. These issues have been misused by the enemies of Islam to divide the Muslims and to weaken them. Therefore in order to unite the Muslims and to defend the boundaries of Islam it is necessary to clear the misunderstandings regarding these differences. In sorting out these issues we have been ordered to confine ourselves within some limits. In his book entitled ‘Mustadrak Sahihayn’ Hakim quotes from son of Ja’far son of Abu Talib1 as saying:‘When the Holy Prophet (S) observed that the Divine blessing was forthcoming he said, ‘Call for me! Call for me!’ Safia asked ‘O Prophet of Allah! Whom should I call for you?’ He said, ‘Call for me the members of my family, namely, Ali, Fatima, Hasan, and Husain’ (May peace and benediction be upon them). They were thus called to come close to the Holy Prophet (S) and when all of them were gathered, the Holy Prophet (S) placed his cloak on them and thereafter raised his hands in supplication and said, ‘O Allah! These are the members of my family. Send your kind blessings on me and my progeny’. In the meantime Almighty Allah revealed the verse:
